BrushStrokes requires 32-bit QuickDraw, which is part of System 7 software. 32-Bit QuickDraw allows display of more than 256 colors and supports grayscale images. For System 6 (except Macintosh II ci, fx, and si, or Macintosh LC, which have QuickDraw built in, regardless of system), install 32-bit QuickDraw from the Apple Color folder on the Printing Tools disk. Drag the 32-Bit QuickDraw file to your System Folder to install, and click OK to replace items of the same name.
With System 6 and a LaserWriter, install LaserWriter 6 and Laser Prep 6 files from Apple Color folder of the Printing Tools disk. These files were designed for color PostScript printers, and halftone printing of grayscale images and color images on monochrome PostScript printers such as Apple LaserWriter printers. Remove existing LaserWriter and Laser Prep files from the System Folder, and then drag files LaserWriter 6 and Laser Prep 6 to your System Folder, and click OK. Use Chooser to reselect your printer and close the Chooser. To print color images to a color printer, or represent color images in shades of gray printing on a black and white printer, select the option "Color/Grayscale" from the print menu. Make sure that everyone on the network uses the same version of LaserWriter and Laser Prep, or the shared printers will reinitialize frequently.
HOW TO USE CLIP ART
Clip art files will make learning BrushStrokes more enjoyable. Copy images to a new file before making changes. If you accidentally change the clip art files, reinstall using the Custom installation procedure.
Using a selection tools described in Chapter 5 of the User's Guide, choose a clip art image, select Copy from the Edit menu, go to your new painting or blank canvas and paste. On pages 5-10 and 5-11, two special selection modes are described. To eliminate the white space around an image, use the Shrink selection setting under the Options menu and Selection sub menu. Transparent selection eliminates colors in the clip art which match the background color; try changing your background color when using this selection mode to make either the image, or the spaces within it, transparent.
Dotted lines surround a selected image, and it can be resized or altered by applying filters. Once the image is deselected, it becomes part of the bit mapped-painting, and no longer can be manipulated as a single image. While an image is still selected, try various choices in the Selection and Transform menus. If you select Plug-in Filters under the Selection menu, you will find a sample of Aldus Gallery Effects, Classic Art Library, one of several plug-in software programs that extend BrushStrokes.
Add paint to black and white clip art one of several ways. Using the Paint Bucket, pour color or gradient colors into enclosed spaces, or the black outline. Airbrushing adds diffused color. You can even use clip art as a template, and paint over the image completely. Colors can be changed in color clip art by using the Colorize or Replace Colors commands.
Most of the clip art are original artwork and photographs by John Mason and James Marsh, of Carmel, California. However, we have also obtained permission from Dover Publications Inc. to include a small sample from a book of 3002 classic art drawings that have inspired artists for more than one hundred years: Handbook of Ornament, by Franz Sales Meyer.
